My monthly newsletter is a dispatch from West Yorkshire’s Upper Calder Valley, gathering together notes from a life spent paying attention to landscape, nature, history and place. Each edition opens with a seasonal moment from the local landscape before moving through A Month in the Valley, a roundup of walks, conversations, projects and discoveries from the previous month. Other regular sections include New Writing, highlighting recently published work; Work in Progress, sharing research and projects still taking shape; From the Archive, revisiting older pieces of writing; and a rotating set of cultural recommendations, including Rural Reads (books), Country Viewing (TV and film), Landscape Listening (radio and podcasts) and Field Recordings (music). The newsletter closes with Upcoming Events – walks, talks, exhibitions, performances and community gatherings connected to the landscapes and communities of the South Pennines. Together, these dispatches aim to chronicle not just what is happening in the valley, but some of the many ways people engage with, understand and care for the places they inhabit.
